ntvdm.exe 99% CPU Usage and nothing happening

I am having trouble running some applications. When I try to start
them, I see ntvdm.exe start up, and go to 99% CPU usage, but nothing
ever happens and the program never starts. This happens with Chips
Challenge, the East Front II installer, even sysedit. I've seen a lot
of messages with similar problems, but I haven't found a solution that
makes the program work. Also, I have XP home with SP2 installed.

Hi,

Close all running programs. Locate ntvdm.exe in the \Windows\System32 folder
and delete it (it's probably corrupt). Reboot the system. See if the problem
goes away, as the file will be replaced by one from the system cache (System
File Protection at work).

Well, I wasn't having any luck fixing the problem, so I tried to
uninstall SP2. After that (and it sure did take a while) those
programs that didn't work seem to be working.
