Some macro viruses will cause this behavior. When's the last
time you did a full virus scan with up-to-date AV software?
If you want to test, you can start Word in safe mode and see
if the problem persists. For any follow-up discussion, we'd
need to know the version of Word involved.
I had this same thing happen to me. In my case something
(probably a virus) messed up the normal.dot file, which is
the most crucial file in word. Simply re-install Word, &
that will re-create. Also as the previous suggestion,

Actually, no, it won't. A reinstall will leave user
preference and template files intact. It's necessary to
rename or delete the Normal.dot file so that Word will
generate a fresh copy.
