Norton Internet Security 04 w/Outlook block Spam increase security

I have Yahoo email and am accessing via Outlook - XP HOme edition which came with Dell Laptop 12/2001. I recently installed Norton Internet Security recently but I don't think I am using it to the best of it's ability with Outlook or perhaps I need something else. I have auto virus check and live update active but somehow people are still sending me a boat load of spam and they are scanning my saved messages (sent and received) and using key words from my personal email subject lines as their email addresses. Sorry if I don't have all the tech terms but I am a newbie here. How can I get rid of these evil doer's?

I know there is software which works with email from unknown addresses or suspicious ones that makes a sender manually verify/identify themself before their email is delivered to a recipient but can't find anyone who knows name of the software. I've experienced this thru work when I've sent email to a prospective client for the first time. I received a "verification request" and my request was routed to recipient so he/she could choose whether or not to accept the original message. Maybe there is a way to configure this thru Outlook but I can't find a resolution and would appreciate feedback, suggestions, solutions. Thank you.

It's called challenge-response - personally, they suck and I won't respond
to the challenge, especially when it's for a reply to a message they sent
me. Some are listed here: http://www.slipstick.com/rules/junkmail.htm#tools

Do you have the antispam stuff configured correctly? Unless you are
infected, the spammers are not scanning your email for keywords to use -
they just know which are the best keywords everyone uses.

I do think my email is till being scanned however b/c I recently sent
emails with the word Catalina in the subject line and a day later received
email from a sender name Catalina.
It would make me suspicious too. Run an online virus scanner - I think
Norton has one, if not mcafee does. Then use a spyware scanner - spybot s&d
and AdWare are two of the most popular:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ to verify you don't have any
spyware sending data to spammers.

Each challenge response system works a little differently, basically you
upload your address book to white list people, then others get the message
and once they respond, they are whitelisted. It's just too much effort for
me for the average message - I would only do it for the most important ones.
One that scans for people you send to then autowhite list them would be
good.

Thank you. I thought the challenge response would only send to people who
are not already in your outlook contact section and once an email address
is registered it stop sending to that person. I do have Norton configure
correctly because I took all of Reccomended settings but I had a virus
right before I installed that which is no gone so who knows. I do think

word Catalina in the subject line and a day later received email from a
sender name Catalina. Not a common name. I run live update
automatically and virus scan with boot up.

Thanks again
