Noisy cpu fan

Jake

My problem is that my CPU fan is making a louder noise than usual. Its
sounds like a buzzing sound. I have switched off my machine and opened it up
and checked everything is seated right, and everything seems ok. But when I
gently turn the CPU fan with my finger it makes the noise. Its like a
gentle rapid ticking, which sounds like an electrical buzz. It cant be
electrical if the fan is off and it still makes it. I am worried that my
fan might give out. Anyone know what could be the problem. Thanks in
advance to anyone that can help. The system is a Dell Dimension 8300. (

Could be dirty in need of cleaning or one of the fins on the fan may be
contacting a fin on the heatsink. Contact Dell, and they should be able to
issue a replacement.

Greetings --

The bearings are going bad. Replace the fan.

If it's really bugging you, clean the fan.

Carefully peel off the bearing cap covering, just enough to gain access.
Apply ONE drop of very light oil, such as sewing machine oil.
Reseal the bearing.

This may give temporary relief, until a new BALL BEARING fan arrives.
