No performance to slow performance

Before installing all the critical updates for Windows, I
was having the problem that my applications wouldn't
launch at all. The cursor would change briefly to the
hourglass, I noticed activity on my modem, then nothing.
Then I installed the updates. Applications still don't
launch. Reinstalled WinXP, reinstalled updates.
Applications now launch, but my system is now crawling. I
have an Athlon 650 BTW, with 640 MB RAM. I noticed in the
Task Manager that I have one service called svchost.exe
(system) using all available resources. Is that normal?
Thanks for any help.

When did you reinstall the Windows updates?

You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 (MS03-013) Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819634

The original 811493 has been replaced with a revised version. On May 28, 2003, Microsoft released a revised version of the 811493 security update for Windows XP SP1 to address this problem. Remove the old one and replace with the new one. You can remove through Add / Remove Programs -Start, Control Panel.

Hope this helps.

Gerry, I reinstalled two days ago, so I guess I have the
most recent version.

Maybe an Athlon 650 is just too slow for XP? I still
would like to know if the process svchoste.exe should be
taking up 98% of the resources with only IE and Outlook
running.

There follows the fruits of some research about svchost.exe ( please note correct spelling ).

A Description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314056

314056 only applies to Windows XP Professional!

After You Install a Visioneer USB Scanner the CPU Usage May Be Unusually High
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303777

It is normal to have a number of Svchost.exe process entries appearing in Task Manager. For the process generating the high usage how is the User described? Next whilst Task Manager is showing high usage change from the Process Tab to the Application Tab. Then select each running Application in turn, right click and select "Go to Process" and see if you can identify the application causing the high usage and report back.

Another thing to try. Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

Here's the culprit: (PID #644)

I did download and run Ad-Aware and it recognized over a
hundred spybot-type objects, but didn't fix my
performance problem. Do you see any suspicious services
here? {Thanks immensely for your help, BTW)
