No network after upgrading WinME to WinXP

I have a HP desktop and a HP laptop. I bought a Netgear router, PCI card for
the desktop and a wireless card for the laptop. When I first set up my
little network, everything was fine. I could print from the laptop to the
printer installed on my desktop and could access files on each computer from
the other. At that time, I did not run Windows Network Setup Wizard. THe
laptop has always been WinXP but the desktop was ME when I set up the network
and then I upgraded to XP. When I couldn't access my network after the
upgrade, I used the Network Setup Wizard. That did not help. I tried HP
Online Help which didn't help and I have read a lot of the posts on this
group. I have tried so many things, can someone please help? I have
activated the guest account with no password, I have disabled the firewall (I
think). I just don't know what to do. I even went to the website with the
troubleshooter that has been referenced in so many of the posts.

Did you reinstall the drivers for the network hardware on the desktop
when you upgraded to XP? Get the proper drivers from the device mftr.'s
website.

Any luck? I have sorta the same problem: I had 2 XPs and a 98 on my
network, all ok. I upgraded the Win98 to XP and now the 2 original XPs
can't see the new one, but the new one can see and share everybody
else. One more funny thing: it won't connect to activate windows.
Surfs the web fine, tho.
