No Connectivity

N

Ned

First, I am on a different PC, since mine can't go
online. I've been reading many of the posts, but have
not been able to get my connectivity back (either dial-up
or LAN).

I've tried the netsh Winsock reset from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;892350 to no avail. Background is as follows:

Installed MS Spyware and ran. From the log file, found
and cleaned newdotnet. Since then, Norton Internet
Security 2003 and Antivirus 2003 have been disabled.
Uninstalled Spyware and NIS. Reinstalled NIS and NIS &
NAV are running again. Ran virus scan with latest defs -
no viruses. Also ran Adaware and Spybot (both up to
date) and found nothing. Also, System Restore will not
restore to an earlier check point (I've tried over a
dozen prior to the Spyware install).

When I go into the LAN connection, it states that it
can't renew the IP address and gives the Limited or No
Connectivity error.

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Ned

Ned,

A fellow sufferer, I read. My girlfriend managed to
arrange the same problem on my PC last night, after
installing a with spyware infected desktop theme. I have
tried all your things as well, did a release and tried a
renew, de- and re-installed the networkdrivers. Other PC
on the same DSL connection works fine, checked everything
and don't know what to do anymore.
Let's hope someone can help us....
Good luck,
Lex

Maybe this might help, then again....

I had this one spyware which was removed by Ad-aware and
cleaned up the rest with Spybot. When I was done, I
noticed I couldn't get an IP address. Rebooted, released
and renewed and even reinstalled drivers. It would work
with a restore but so did the spyware. I then found this
tool, Winsock Fix by Option^Explicit. Removed spyware and
ran this tool and now I'm back online. It can be found
many places but I got my at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Hope this helps.

I'm back. :(
Well it turns out my brother's quick-fix was just that, a
quick fix that has failed. He thought, against my better
judgement, that our internet problems were related to the
dual-firewalls I had running (ZoneAlarm and Windows). I
told him that I had recently removed spyware from my
computer and that the problems arose only after that, but
needless to say here I am again so you can tell my
suggestions fell on deaf ears. I was digging through the
System Manager and looking at the Security and System logs
that had been created and noticed that in each instance
just before the internet quit working on my computer an
error was detected. The error stated that the DCHP could
not connect to the server and that my usual IP address was
already in use on the network, so my computer reconfigured
automatically and found a new one. I'm not sure if this
is any indication of what may be wrong. Also, since it may
help anyone trying to help me, the programs that were
removed by the MS-AntiSpyware tool included: KaZaa Lite,
Morpheus, iMesh, NewDotNet and so forth. For the P2P
programs all that was removed were the registry values
since I uninstalled the programs when the Government began
its witch hunt. However, New.net I've been told doesn't
like to be removed and that that is probably the source of
my problems. I ran the WinSockXPFix tool and I released
and renewed my connection all to no avil. System restore
will not take me to a restore point before the MS-
AntiSpyware scan. So I'm stuck with no internet, in fact
I'm making this post from my college network. I can check
this frequently so please anyone offer up advice, it'd be
much appreciated, again. Thanks.

I also lost my connectivity when I installed MS Spyware.
I uninstalled it, but still have the limited or No
Connectivity Error. This is very frustrating. I hope
someone has the answer.

Thanks.

Yes the insidiousness of loss of conectivity is a major
issue for me as well. i went round and round and like you
i had to start another computer to gain access to some
answers.thru normal channels of course there were none.
ty ms for placing this newsgroup in a place i could find.

in my perticular case it was the beta that held the key
to my problem in the form of a right nasty browser
hyjack.using macafee i tracked it down and reported it
since one of the draw backs to the beta is it tried to
send a report but could not.no connectivity.
then as i strugeled to figure what next macafee began to
fail, by sending repeated reports of no value. it was
then that i turned on the sygate firewall and as if a
light switch conectivity was restored. go figure ey?

Bill,

Thanks for the reply. From my original post, I have
tried this and it didn't work. Also, As posted above
from "E", I have run winsockxpfix (forgot to originally
post this fact....) and still can not connect.

The IP address will not renew when I put it to
automatically get address.

Any other suggestions welcome.

Thanks ,
Ned

That response was made to "anonymous" who didn't mention having already
tried those steps.

Can you describe your network and your connection to the Internet? What
device supplies your IP address?

I do wonder a little about NIS, and whether it might be complicating your
recovery from the original issue, which I believe to be the removal of
newdotnet by Microsoft Antispyware, causing the problem with the Winsock
stack.

Thanks Bill,

The PC is conected to my router (only temporarily to
update it and then back to dial-up). It automatically
supplies the IP (192.168....). Although I haven't needed
to do it in the past (since I am only using this
connection for PC updates) I setup the IP range in NIS to
ensure NIS wasn't blocking the router.

Something I find strange is that when it tries to get an
IP address from the router, it takes ~5 minutes and then
comes back with an IP address of 169.254.242.213, which
isn't from my router. Newdotnet was detected and
removed, but after all the above, I still can't get a
good IP address and get online. Also, after getting
that address above, it will send a few packets, but not
recieve any. Also, it says it is connected, ,but I can
not get online.

I'm stumped.

The 169 address is an apipa (automatic private IP addressing) address which
indicates that the machine didn't find a DHCP server.

Let's start with the basics. The router has lights on it indicating
connections to given ports, and the NIC on your machine probably has an
equivalent "link" light. When you connect the ethernet cable from your
machine to the router, do you get a link light at both ends of the
connection?

I'm inclined to recomment resetting TCP/IP:

I am having EXACTLY the same problem. Have also tried
winsock reset. Also see the DCHP errors in my logs.
PLEASE let me know if you figure it out.

Thanks Bill, The netsh int ip reset worked. i also found
a download manager (WinGet) that may have compounded the
problem. My sequence was:

1. Uninstall WinGet.
2. From cmd: netsh int ip reset
3. From cmd: netsh winsock reset
4. Rebooted and online.

Thanks for your help Bill. I hope this post helps others.

Terrific! You may be right that the download manager compounded things, but
getting working again is what's important--glad it worked.

Ned, I'm still losing my connection. How did you find and
remove the WinGet download manager? I've tried steps 2-4
below and still am losing my DSL connection.
