New slide is always Title Slide layout

I'm using PowerPoint 2007 on XP. When I make a new slide, why does it
always use the Title Slide layout? Shouldn't the layout to be title and
content so I have in a bulleted list? Can I force it to be a bulleted list
somehow without changing the layout everytime? Is there a setting somewhere
to control the layout?

I've used two methods: (1) I click the New Slide button on the Home tab,
and (2) I right-click on the Slides Thumbnail panel and choose New Slide.
Even if my new slide follows a bullet list, it still gives me Title Slide
layout. I always have to change the layout.

Check in Master view that the Title/Text layout is the second layout from
the top (not counting the larger Master). If it isn't move it to this
position and see if that changes anything

you choose the appropriate layout then?

"blank" layout, my inserted slide will also have a blank layout. The
exception is when you've got the first slide selected. Because that's almost
always a Title Slide Layout, PPT uses the "text and content" layout for the
following slide. And when you just hit the top of the New Slide button or
right-click and choose New Slide in the slide thumbnails pane, then you get
the default.

2003 generally works the same, although I think you may get a Title Slide
layout if you've got a Title Slide selected somewhere in the presentation
(like if you've used a title slide layout for a section break slide, for
example). In 2007, I always get "title + content" following a Title Slide
Layout no matter where in the presentation the Title Slide Layout is used.

There are also some issues with Title Slide Masters and Title Slide Layouts
when moving from 2007 to 2003 and back. That could help explain why you're
getting Title Slide layouts when you're not expecting them.

I understand what you just explained. But mine doesn't do that It is
NOT taking on the layout of the slide I'm current on - it ALWAYS chooses
Title Slide layout. Even when starting from scratch, or when editing
someone elses PPT. Mine is broken

Thanks but the title/test is the second from the top. My new slide does not

bullet list like I should. Is there something I can do to fix it on my pc?
Is there an update or a file that can be replaced? What a crazy problem!

No kidding crazy!

Try running diagnostics. It's in Office Button | PPT Options | Resources.

If that doesn't do it, well...do you have Shyam's default slide layout
add-in installed? http://www.mvps.org/skp/

Oh, or are you working in compatibility mode? (It will say it at the top of
the screen.) Dunno -- maybe you're somehow set up to open/work in that mode?

Sorry that didn't work for you. I thought I'd explain my logic just in case
something here helps!

If you just click "NEW SLIDE" without choosing a layout normally 2007
appears to act just like 2003 and add a title / text slide but the logic is
not the same!

In 2007, unlike 2003, you can change the layouts in any way including delete
completely the Title/Text layout. This is why it doesn't just default to this
layout.

First option seems to be Layout 2 whatever it is

If there's only one layout then layout 1

However this logic can fail sometimes and then it seems to go for Title
layout, I had a file with several identical title/text laouts and that seemed
to confuse the logic!

Maybe you have a pot / potx file called blank that has strange layouts,
maybe layout 2 is somehow corrupt

Problem solved. I did the Diagnostics as suggested but there were no
issues. Then I checked the Addins and found a PowerPoint addin called
"layout" which I disabled. Now the new slides appear as they should. It's
located in App Data\Microsoft\Addins\addin.ppa

Thank you for you help with this. You both pointed me in the right
direction.
