Networking Win2K Pro and WinXP Pro

J

Julie

I cannot network my Windows 2000 Professional laptop with
my new Windows XP Professional desktop.

I cannot use the network configuration wizard in XP
because it does not support win2k.

When I go to the DOS window, I can ping the XP machine
from the win2k machine, but I cannot ping the win2k
machine from the XP machine.

When I look for computers near me (since I set them both
up on the same workgroup) neither computer can see the
other.

I am missing something, but I can't figure out for the
life of me what it is.

Any suggestions??

TIA,
Julie

Julie,

Make sure both computers are in the same workgroup, on the same
subnet, and have an identical userid / password.

Do "ipconfig /all" on both, and post the output here.

Chuck

Is ICF enabled on the XP computer? Do you have any firewall on the 2K
computer?

Do "ipconfig /all" on both, and post the output here.

Chuck,

They have the same subnet mask - 255.255.255.0.

They have the same default gateway - 192.168.1.1.

The XP's IP address is 192.168.1.100. The Win2k's IP
address is 192.168.1.103.

I set up a Workgroup called MSHOME for both machines.
When that didn't work, I went through the process of
resetting up the workgroup on both machines and changed
the workgroup name to WORKGROUP.

I set up a username in XP that is the same as my win2k
machine, but it has a different password. Does that make
a difference?

What else can I try?

PS - I have Norton Security Professional on the win2k
machine, but I disabled it. I disabled Mcaffee on the XP
machine as well.

I will change my username on the XP machine and see if
that works.

Let me know what else to try.

Thanks,
Julie

Julie,

Username / password has to be identical on both.

What result do you get when pinging each (by ip address) from the
other? Pinging each (by ip address) from itself? Pinging 127.0.0.1
from each?

Post "ipconfig /all" and "route print" from each, let's see if
anything shows up.

How are the two connected? Router (best) / hub (good) / crossover
cable (OK) / patch cable (bad)? Have you tried replacing cable(s)?

Chuck,

I pinged 192.168.1.100 (the win2k pc) from the xp pc and
it did not reply. I pinged 192.168.1.103 (the xp pc) from
the win2k pc and I did get a reply.

I had the 2 pcs connected via a Netopia combo router/dsl
modem. To eliminate any issues with a combo router, I
purchased an autosensing DLink switch and took out the
Netopia router. I purchased 2 new ethernet cables and it
still doesn't work.

I left the restaurant so I can't route print, but I will
do it later today when I go back.

Thanks for your help.

Julie,

That's a good start - changing hardware. But the problem is still
there, so you haven't replaced the faulty hardware.

You've done 2 of the 6 pings that might help us isolate the problem.
Now do the other 4 please.

From 192.168.1.103 (XP) ping 192.168.1.103, then 127.0.0.1. From
192.168.1.100 (2K) ping 192.168.1.100, then 127.0.0.1.

The Netopia should have an ip address. Ping it from each too.

The Netopia should have lights on it, I don't know about the switch.
Try both. Connect everything, are there lights showing connections?
If so, what devices show connection? Do you see a light for both the
2K and XP computers?

And when you're able, "ipconfig /all" and "route print", from both
computers please.

Between all of the above, we should see first which computer is broke.
Once we see that, then we can figure out why it's broke.

Chuck

Chuck,

I figured it out. Firstly, one of my brand new CAT5
cables must have been bad. I replaced it with one I knew
worked and I was able to ping from both machines.

Then I renamed my LAN Network Connection in the Win2k
machine to have the exact name as the LAN Connection in
the other machine. Ironically, I am not logged on as the
same user on both machines but it works.

Now I am off to figure this out with a VPN added to the
equation. Wish me luck.

Thanks,
Julie

Have you setup share permissions on each system or are you trying
to use the Admin defaults?
