Networking Win XP Pro with Win XP Pro

John Bordieri

Hi,

So heres the deal... I tried numerous times to network Win XP Pro and Win
2000 Pro and failed each time. Now I have both machines running a fresh copy
of Win XP Pro, and I get the same results as before. NOTHING. I am able to
connect to the internet with both machines but I can not share files or the
printer. Whats with that? The printer is wired to one machine with the
latest drivers it is a HP 5550. (Great Printer!)

On both machines I turn them on and the desktop comes right up, it doesn't
ask for any user name or password. they both have the same workgroup name
,the same computer name and the same full computer name. I am using a
Linksys WRT54G 802.11G Wireless-G broadband access point Router. Even though
the router is wireless I have both computers wired to the router. That
shouldn't make a difference, right?

I believe I have all the right settings and have all the things I need on or
enabled. So tell me what am I missing or doing wrong. I have been to this
newsgroup 3-4 times a day for the last week trying to get differnt ideas and
tips. You all are wonderful for the help you give to one another keep up the
good work.

Thank you,
John Bordieri

If your computers both have the same computer name, they can't network
with each other. Each computer on a network must have a unique name.

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers. Tell it that they
connect to the Internet through a residential gateway. Give them the
same workgroup name and different computer names.
