networking problem on Windows XP PC's: KazaaLite and filesharing works, but Internet Explorer and Me

Hello,

An acquaintance of mine has a networking problem. We have tried for hours to
try a solution, we even searched via Google but couldn't find the answer to
the problem.

Situation:
He wants to create a small home network between two Windows XP PC's to share
the Internet connection. He has installed network cards and a crossed UTP
cable. Physically, the network is completely OK. However, the configuration
is apparently not going smoothly. After configuring the network by means of
the wizard, he can use KazaaLite to download stuff from the second computer,
he can also access the files from one PC to another, BUT he can't use
Internet Explorer nor Messenger. These programs can't seem to be able to
connect to the Internet. Of course, on the first PC everything works 100%.
The network is very slow though.
He has no firewall installed and the Windows firewall is deactivated as
well.
We have tried working with fixed IP addresses (because that solved a problem
of mine a while back) but that didn't work either, so we went back to
automatic IP addresses.

Does anyway know why this is happening? Thanks in advance.

I'm no MVP but I don't believe you can share a internet connection over a
crossover cable. You need an access point which requires a router.

Is ICS enabled on the main PC (thry the dialup)?
and 192.168.0.1 typed in on the main PC. (thru the LAN icon)?

And 192.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 default gateway
192.168.0.1 and preferred DNS server also
192.168.0.1 on the connected PC.

Select Use the following IP address on BOTH
PC's. Automatic will change them everytime u reboot
both (if you do). Also BOTH have to have the same
workgroup which I see you've figured out since you
can copy files. If the main PC hasnt got a firewall
or any kind of protection, or it hasnt been updated
I suggest u enable the firewall thru the dialup. And
also enable ICS thru the dialup.
