Network went down after XBox 360 Extender Setup

Guest

I have an MCE computer that is networked through a Router to wired and
wireless computers. It has worked fine for years, but I lost access to its
drives and printer recently when I tried to add a second XBox360 Extender.

I incorrectly tried to us the PCSetup procedure to add the second Extender
to the system. Since then I learned how to do it right and the Extenders
work fine, but I can no longer access the hard drives or the printer on the
MCE computer. All computers have interent access and I tried the usual
fixes, ie, setup home network etc.

I tried to find help in the Knowledge Base, but have not been able to find a
solution. I cannot get the MCE computer or any other PC to be able to "see"
the other computers in the Domain. Note that I use a different Domain Name
to match the one at work, not the default MSHOME or whatever it is. This
worked fine before, so I don't think this is the problem.

Any suggestions on how to debug this problem?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Chris,

Look at "browstat status"and "ipconfig /all", from each computer, and diagnose
the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Now if you have a genuine domain, you may have trouble with MCE. That shouldn't
affect visibility though

Chuck,

Thanks so much for creating such a thorough and in-depth summary of Network
Debugging. I have spent the last two hours going through this link and
associated links, following all recommendations, but still the problem
remains.

My network consists of a Cable Modem that is connected to a Router. An
MCE2005 PC, a Wireless Laptop, a G4 Mac and a G4 Mac Wireless are all
connected to the Router. Internet access works on all computers.

I am unable to share resources that are on the MCE computer, including
Printers and Drives. The MCE Computer sees my Laptop, but will not connect,
reporting a NOT ACCESSIBLE error.

My Laptop does not see the MCE Computer. I use my laptop at work in a
wirless network and everything works fine, so I have not spent any time
messing with its settings.

One strange thing is that my wife tells me her MAC sees the MCE computer.

Here is IP CONFIG File:

Hopefully you can help me find the cause of this problem. As you will
recall, it all started when I tried to use the PCSetup procedure for the
connection of a 2nd XBOX 360 Extender to my MCE Computer. Again, I later
learned that this is not the way to do this and have successfully connected
two XBOX 360 Extenders to the MCE Computer and it works great. The only
problem is that I can no longer back up to the MCE Computer's drives, nor use
its printer.

Chris,

This will be a lot easier to diagnose, if you can provide all requested
diagnostics. That would include "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config
server", and "net config workstation", from EACH computer, including MCE. Read
how to get "browstat" downloaded and installed.

Chuck,

Thanks again for your willingness to help. Ok, I think I have everything
you requested pasted below.

This info is only for the MCE (Server) computer. I suspect it is the
problem since I take my laptop to work everyday and it connects to the work
network fine.

Hope this provides you with enough info to identify the problem....

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

We don't know where the problem is, right now. You have at least 3 computers.
Diagnosing a problem like yours is a lot easier when we can examine the
(suspected) problem computer PLUS at least 2 properly working computers. It's
called relational diagnosis. Please read my tutorial for motivation.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html

Then try and gather diagnostic data for 2 other computers. And when you gather
diagnostics, try and do it all at the same time. It's your network, and you
want it working. Help us to help you do that.

Chris,

So far, we have 2 computers. One computer (HTPCold) gets browser SMBs from
itself, and server SMBs from itself and one other computer. The other computer
(CSTVaio) is getting no SMBs. Both computers are in the same broadcast domain
(192.168.0.0/24), and in the same Windows Networking domain / workgroup (PASE).

This is, most likely, a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component, on CSTVaio. There are several other possibilities too, and
any might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Also check for a consistent NetBT setting on each computer. This setting must
be reflected by your firewall settings.
