Network connection and spooler subsystem error

T

tom

I am trying to set up a network with two XP computer.
When I run network connection on my laptop-no problem.
When I run network connection on my desktop, I get a
Spooler Subsystem Error and the network setup fails. My
configuration is DSL to Linksys Wireless Router-ethernet
to desktop. Wireless card on laptop. No problem with
internet access but can't share files or printer. Any
ideas? Thanks.

Greetings tom,

First see the MS KB article before tring these instructions.

Try stopping the spooler service before running the networking wizard. Open the command prompt and type "net stop spooler" (without quotes) and hit the ENTER key. Then run the Network Wizard again. Then you can restart the spooler service by typing "net start spooler" (without quotes) or restarting the machine.

Here's the MS KB Article

"Spooler Subsystem App Has Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close" and "Operation Could Not Be Completed" Error Messages

Following directions in another post, I successfully
solved a similar problem (after 2.5 years of
frustration):
1. start > run "net stop spooler"
2. then use wizard to "set up home or small office
network":
3. start > run "net start spooler"

ADDITIONALLY, in order to network a XP Home PC to a XP Pro
PC, for unknown reasons, I ALSO had to configure LMHOSTS
and NETBIOS on BOTH PCs:
1. double click "my network places"
2. click "view network connections"
3. right click "local area connection"
4. click "properties"
5. click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
6. click "properties"
7. click "advanced"
8. click "WINS" tab
9. checkoff little boxes that:
-"enable LMHOSTS lookup"
-"Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
