I'm trying to re-set up my home network. I have a laptop and desktop each
running XP. The desktop is connected to a wireless router via ethernet cable,
while the latpop is connected to the router via a wireless card. Both computers
can see the router and can access the internet via the cable modem.

The problem is that neither computer can see each other on the network. I
turned on file sharing for the hard disks in each computer, and I've run the
network setup wizard on both computers. I don't have any firewalls (ZoneAlarm
is turned off) when I try to do this.

Currently the laptop can see the network, while the desktop can't even see the
network. In the Windows Explorer on my laptop, when I go to My Network Places
| Microsoft Windows Network | HomeNet, it lists both my laptop and desktop, but
selecting the desktop gives an error message "Desktop is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource. ... The network path
was not found." In the Network Connections, I have my Wireless Network
Connection set to "Enabled". The 1394 Connection is disabled.

When I look at the Microsoft Windows Network on my desktop, it shows HomeNet,
but selecting it gives me the same error message as above except that it says
"HomeNet is not accessible....". It doesn't even list itself as being on the
network. In the Network Connections, I have my Local Area Connection set to
"Enabled, Shared, Firewalled". The 1394 Connection is disabled. (Might this
firewall be the culprit? I can't find how to disable it.)

I ran the Network Setup Wizard on both machines, the laptop using the option
that says it's connecting to the internet via another computer, and the desktop
using that option and again with the "connecting directly" option. File sharing
is properly set.

What easy thing am I missing?

Maybe this could help. I was in the same boat as you. Found one more switch
to turn on....

In windows explorer, click tools > folder options > views> put a checkmark
in "Automatically search for network folders and printers". Finally got me
going.

It was already checked. I turned it off, saved the changes, then turned it back
on and saved again. Didn't work. :(

Thanks anyway, I'm sure there have to be others out there with this same
problem.
