Navigation issues re: both index.htm and index.html

[Using FP2002 on XP.]

FP creates *.htm pages. The host server (linux) creates an index.html page
in addition to the index.htm page that is created by FP and uploaded during
publishing. The server uses the .html page as the home page, but when I
create buttons pointing to home within the FP web I'm working on locally,
those are pointing to index.htm.

Since there can only be one home page in the navigation structure, one of
these home pages is going to lack a working navigation bar. I would like
the operational home page to be the index.htm that FP has created. How do I
get the host to go along with this? It seems like it will be working
properly for a month or two then one day we check the site and the
navigation bar has disappeared again ....

I seem to recall post about this in the past, but could not find it when I
searched the topics this morning. Thanks if you can help me sort this
issue out.

most times you can just open your live web with FrontPage and delete the
..html page and the .htm page will be the second choice for the "default"
page.

If that doesn't work you can just rename you local home page to index.html
and publish your web.

Thanks, Chris. I also found some other information that suggests I can
create a .htaccess file that specifies the order I want my pages served and
use that to make sure index.htm is the first choice for the home page.

Question: If I edit the live web and delete the html page, won't the host
server just replace it? I ask this because obviously I did not create the
first instance of index.html ... they did, apparently because a file w/ the
..html extension must exist in my web on a linux server.... Wouldn't they
just keep replacing it?

If so, then it sounds like the approach of renaming my local index.htm file
to .html might be the way to go, that or the .htaccess file.

Thanks for any additional insight you can offer on how this works....

I wouldn't bother. I think you need root permissions on the server for this
anyway.

No, they just put one in there when they first make your folder. It won't
be replaced if you delete it.

If you rename your local index page to the html extension it should be fine.
just click tools/ recalculate hyperlinks before you publish.

No sweat. Your problem is fairly common and easy to remedy.
