My favorite links are gone...

Guest

Hello everyone,

Because of that horrible Norton Antivirus, i had to sent back my new PC
(asus F5R) to the PC dealer, who reinstalled (forgive my english, i am french
:-D) Vista and all the other things.
But when i got my PC for the second time, the favorite links had disappeared
: they are (empty).
I have to precise that i ask them to put the Pictures, the Documents and the
Music on D: (whereas these folders where on C:, previously).

* The "Links" folder contains the usual shortcuts : Pictures, Music, etc...

* I didn't try to delete the arrow on the icon of the shortcuts. I say this
because i heard about a problem with favorite links, which could appear when
you try this, and it deletes the "Is_Shortcut" Key in the register base. But
i didn't do this, futhermore i checked the register a few days ago, and this
key is here yet.

* This morning, i uploaded an avatar on a forum (i don't know how you say in
english... maybe a "discussion group" or something like that), so as you can
imagine, the explorer openned for me to select the picture i wanted. And
then, there was others favorite links, like "Réseau" (it should be something
like Network in english) etc... the favorite links were not empty.

How can i do to restore my favorite links ? I tried to do the "drag and
drop" thing (glisser-déposer as we say in french), but it didn't worked, and
i also try to click on "restore the default favorite links" (or something
like that in english), but still nothing.

Thank you "d'avance" (french expression which mean something like "before
you do it")

If your PC Dealer did not save the Favorites Links before they formatted the
hard drive and then reinstalled Vista, you will not be able to recover those
links. Formatting the hard drive completely deletes everything.

I understand, but what about the default favorite links ?
I wasn't talking about favorite links i had choosen (and i didn't add any
favorite links the first time...)

When they reinstalled Vista, the default favorite links should have been
reinstalled too, shouldn't they ?
For example, as i explained in my previous message, when i uploaded a
picture yesterday and a window openned for me to choose it, i saw some
favorite links...

I forget to precise something yesterday : on the navigation panel, when i
right click on the empty column, i have the choice between "restore default
favorite links" (as i said, it didn't work), and "open the favorite links
folder". When i click on it, nothing happens. So i think it doesn't find the
folder with favorite links, but i have a "Links" folder with all the default
links inside.

So, any ideas to recover the default kinks ?

:)

If you are looking at the Navigation Pane in Windows Explorer, Move the
cursor to top of the Navigation Pane, right above the name Folders. The
cursor will change to a double arrow. Press and hold the left mouse button
and drag that divider down.

Is this what you are looking for?

Sorry, i suppose i didn't explained my problem very well.

I did a screen capture : http://imgoxy02.free.fr/file/8.15650.jpg

As you can see, the favorite links (liens favoris) are empty (vide), and i
couldn't recover them... this is my problem.

I don't want to hide them, but to recover them.

Aha! OK, now I see the problem. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand
words. :)

All of the folders that appear in the Favorites Links section of the
Navigation Pane are shortcuts to folders or other objects. You can place a
folder there by simply dragging and dropping the folder in the Favorite
Links section. When you drag and drop a folder there a shortcut is created
for the folder, you aren't actually moving the folder.

All of these shortcuts are contained in the C:\Users\your username\Links
folder. You can also use this folder to create shortcuts that will appear in
the Favorite Links section.

The default shortcuts are:
Documents
Pictures
Music
Recently Changed
Searches
Public

If you want to remove a shortcut from that list, you can right click the
shortcut and select the "Remove Link" option. You can also remove one of the
shortcuts by deleting it from the Links folder.

Let me know if this answers your question.

things you are telling my, and it doesn't work.
I did a second screen cap : you will see my links folder, which contain all
the usual shortcuts, but they are NOT in the favorite links.
This is my problem : there is nothing in the favorite links panel, and
whatever is the way is try, i can't change it !

You can add shortcuts to your Links folder. It is generally located at: %USERPROFILE%\Links

for instance, mine would be C:\Users\Kody\Links

Just create shortcuts in that folder, then close and re-open Explorer.

Ok, So How do you remove the Favorite Links from within the folder view?

You cannot remove the Favorite Links from the navigation pane.

Hover your cursor over the top of the Folders section until you see the
double arrow appear. Press and hold the left mouse button and drag the
Folder pane to the top of the window. This will effectively cover the
Favorite Links pane and should stay that way.

I know that I'm three years late responding this, and that everybody out there must be using Windows 7 by now, but I think it pays to post a solution (or at least a recommendation).

Rahpi14, if you're still alive and interested in this issue, I think our problem is not having Windows in the default English language. As of me, spanish is my language, and so is my Vista. And I think I had exactly the same problem as you: the navigation pane was empty, dropping items on it didn't work, and "restoring" the default links didn't work either.

I noticed that some folders in my language acted as some sort of "alias". For example, I could reach the same folder typing "C:\Users" or "C:\Usuarios" (users in spanish). So my Links folder, named "Favoritos" in spanish Vista was full of shortcuts, but they could'n show up. So I made a folder specifically named "Links" and it worked!

In short, my advice is: create a folder named "Links" on your "Rapha?lle" folder, and use it instead of the the same level as your "Liens" one.
