After a Windows xp pro upgrade from win 2k pro--
"My computer" icon when double click comes up with the flashlight looking
for the "a" drive, hard drives and CD/DVD drive very slow; about a two

Hi Mike,

A known issue with Windows Image Acquisition can cause this. Start/run
msconfig and disable this line on the services tab. After you reboot, the
search behavior should cease.

I, too have this problem, among a zillion others, after
upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows xp home edition. I
followed your directions and disabled windows image acq
on the services tab. When I reboot, I get a message which
says I have changed something and am running in
diagnostic mode, so I am instructed to go back and select
the normal mode, which replaces the checkmark I removed
from Windows Image Acquisition. chasing my tail, I await
your advice. Many, many thanks.

Hi,

Use selective startup, enable everything under that category, and leave WIA
disabled.
