MVPsPlease Help! Connecting via crossover cableXPto98

Chris

I recently bought a crossover cable to move files from
our old PC running on Windows 98 to our new computer
running on XP.

Is this possible, and if so, how do I do it?

I have set up the connection on our new XP PC as the
guest and I can try to connect but it asks for a user
name and password. If I had XP on the old computer I
think I would be able to set that up as the host and
create a user name and password but we haven't got enough
space on the old computer to install XP on that as well
as 98.

Please help!

Many thanks

Chris

I have no users on 98.

Do I have to create one?

Firstly you will need to have the same users set up on both PC's - don't use
Guest! - Also you will have to enable sharing on the system you wish to
access remotely. This is done slightly differently on 98 than xp. This is
most probably already done however - so share some folders (right click a
folder and choose sharing ***) and set the same users on both systems. If it
still doesn't work - post back for some more detailed info on setting up
sharing on 98 - You are nearly there.

Yes - same users and same passwords on each box -
At the moment the the actual boxes are trusted - but the users are not
because they do not exist - try it and let us know

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers, which will make the
necessary network settings:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networksetupwiz.htm

On the Windows 98 computer, right click the hard disk, click Sharing,
and make it a shared disk. You'll then be able to access it through
My Network Places on the XP computer to copy files.

There's no need for matching user accounts to copy files from 98 to
XP.
