Music sounds muffled, underwater, kaoke, etc

I have had this happen before but can't remember the solution. When I pleay
music in either RealPlayer or MEdia Player it sounds weird, I can hear the
music fine but the words are muted somehow.

Any help?

Sounds like you have some "karaoke" application running. Check your
soundcard applications - EAX console for Audigy. Alternatively, you can
check your equalizer settings - midrange too low.
