MSHOME.net

Hi,
Am running a small office network of 10 PCs. The Workgroup has a name.
All PCs use APIPA to comminicate and everything is quite fine.
This network uses ICS through one PC.
What goes wrong is that when internet connection is established and the
modem get an IP address from the ISP, the IP address of the MAC on all PCs
changes to a class B 192, x, y, z address (I don't remeber the second quad)
and the workgroup name becomes MSHOME.net. Simply taken, the network and the
ICS stop working.
Any clue why that is so.
Thanks
Yba.

Stop using ICS !

Get a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41. The Router has a DHCP server that will
provide IP addresses to all LAN nodes and the LAN will not be dependent of a PC loaiding
ICS. If you are a DSL subscriber doing PPPoE then the Router, not the PC, will make the
PPPoE connection.

The Router will also act as a simplistic FireWall that will protect your LAN from hackers
and Internet worms.

And also be aware that XP Home has a limit of 5 remote connections and Pro
has a limit of 10. By using a true broadband router, your problem should be
solved.

Hi,
Thanks guys.
I forgot to mention that the those PCs use XP Pro and only currently
available connection is dial-up.
So, is it possible to keep it all as is and still stop this MSHOME thing
coming up? Besides, where it basically come from?
Thanks

Get a Router with a RS-232 port for a v.90/v.92 modem or a Cable/DSL Router with a backup
RS-232 port for a v.90/v.92 modem. I would also suggest getting broadband instead as it is
ridiculous to share a DUN connection amongst 10 platforms.

Hi,
Ok, all fine.
Just, why this MSHOME thing comes up with 192 class B IP address.
Thanks
Yba
