It seems to me that entries like ctfmon (and others) regain their tic

added, so that there is a ticked and an unticked one in the list. Ca
that be prevented

MSConfig is a diagnostic tool and normally should not be used as a
startup configurer for the very reason you cited.

If you want fewer programs/processes to automatically run at bootup, it
is best to go to the Preferences section of each program. Are there
other programs/processes besides ctfmon that are troubling you?

Also keep in mind that as long as you have enough RAM, these programs
can still run in the background without any noticeable performance hit.
