Movie Maker saved project only as TMP - how do I get project back?

I've been editing a Windows Movie Maker project. Thing is it only saved it as
a WMT.tmp or TMP file and not WMM file. Any ideas how to find and open it
again?

Do you know how to import a WMT.tmp or TMP file into Windows Movie Maker?
I've been working on a project that apparently was only saved as a WMT file!
I've been having a prob saving the video I'd edited. Every time I went back
to carry on with the edit I have been clicking on the 'File' drop down list
of most recent project files, which then opened up the project for editing ok.

Only now I realised that it didn't seem to be saving as a normal Windows
Movie Maker file or .MSWMM file, but only a WMT.tmp text file!

As a possible indicator of probs, a pop up box kept popping up saying
'Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low', and system was expanding to
resolve the prob, on several occasions. Is this a RAM issue? Not enough RAM
maybe? I currently am running on 512Mb RAM. I suspect as it was only saving
project as a TMP file, this related to the fact it was limited to a certain
file size. I guess!

I tried to see if deleting some older WMM project files might help. With
doing this though, I couldn't then find the project file I was editing, as it
obviously had disappeared from the most recent project file list (from the
'File' drop down menu), being replaced by the most recently accessed files -
the ones I accessed in order to delete. I therefore lost the shortcut the
drop down list from 'File' menu was using to import the project. Really don't
think I deleted the project file itself. Looks like it was never saved as a
proper WMM file, just a TMP, so that's what I'm left with, and can't get WMM
to read.

I can see the WMT.tmp or TMP file (actually WMT1.tmp) in 'My Videos' folder,
and it has my project title within it. But Windows Movie Maker will not
recognise it or allow me to import it due to having lost the shortcut link
which it seemed to require to re-open it.

Any suggestions on both getting hold of this file to open or convert to open
into Windows Movie Maker editing prog? And also do I need to increase my RAM
size to resolve the low virtual memory prob? And are the two related?

I really don't want to lose all the work I've put into this, and would
really appreciate any help as soon as possible. Many thanks.

Paul,

You've nailed the "virtual memory" problem. I too was experiencing "vitual
memory too low" until I increased my RAM from 512 to 1024. With 1024 the
problem has disappeared. WINDOW's suggested action for this "error" (which
Wojo quoted previously) didn't do squat.

It could be that WMM automatically saved your "project" (didn't render
anything) as a .TMP file when your system was interupted due to "virtual
memory" too low. But, if you didn't shut down WMM, while WINDOWS was
increasing the "paging file", when it finished, you should have been able to
continue on and save your project.

I would,

1) Increase your RAM
2) Double click the .TMP file, if it doesn't open up anything automatically,
it's useless.
3) Search your computor for .MSWMM files, if it doesn't find your project
then you have inadvertantly deleted it and will have to start from scratch.

Noteky, thanks for this. I didn't shut down WMM, while WINDOWS was increasing
the "paging file", but failed to save the project properly anyhow. My
assumption is exactly as you say. I failed to hit the right choice and pop!
My project went out the window(s)! It just seems very frustrating and odd
that WMM cannot import the TMP file to regenerate the project. But there we
go. A useless file it seems, and a whole waste of time and effort. I'll just
have to get back on that horse and ride it!

Many thanks once again. Paul

as unstable as moviemaker is, get in the habit of saving your project as
soon as you begin it, and click Save OFTEN!! there are settings in the
options to control how often WMM will autosave, but do yourself a favor and
get in the habit of save, save, save .

Yes I do every time thanks. And I did with this project. Unfortunately it
wasn't saving as I thought it was. Thanks anyway.
