Move "Documents and Settings" to another drive?

Is there any way to move the "Documents and Settings" folder to a different
drive (move it off the C drive)?

When I installed WindowsXP Pro, I created a boot/system partition of 8 GB,
and even though I install almost all software to a different partition, my C
drive is running low on space. It looks as though, other than the Windows
folder itself, the Documents and Settings folder is the largest folder (in
bytes) on the C drive, so it looks like a likely candidate to move, if
possible. I've got plenty of space available on another drive.

I searched the registry and came up with a number of keys that include the
path to the Documents and Settings folder. Is it likely that changing the
path in all of these keys and then moving the Documents and Settings folder
to the new path would do the trick, or is the Documents and Settings path
hard-coded somewhere?

Hi

You can try right-clicking that folder, dragging it to another location and then selecting 'Move Here'. However, you will run into a multitude of problems regarding the entries in the Registry. Probably best to leave that folder where it is.

The 'Documentsd and Settings' folder is a default system folder.

It is better not to attempt to relocate it.

Create another folder call Documents on another partition or Drive.

Move the contents of your existing 'My Documents' there. Make sure that you change the default locations for saving documents in the various apps [eg Word, Excel] so that they point to you new folder. Also create a shortcut in C:\My Documents to the nnew D:\Documents folder.

You can also save some space on the C Drive by running disk cleanup: get rid of old internet files and also in the advanced section you can choose to delete all but the most recent System Restore Files - these take up huge amounts of space.
