Mouse pointer jumps away

This does not necessarily always happen but some times the mouse pointer
jumps away to the top left corner area from where I click. Is there a
remedy to stop this from happening?

You might try cleaning the mouse, especially if it's an optical mouse.

Could you post what or where to clean an optical mouse? I know exactly
how to clean a legacy mechanical mouse but an optical mouse appears to
me that there is none to clean.
Your further assistance is appreciated.

desktop or laptop? touchpad or mouse? optical or wheel? wireless?

could be:
worn out mouse,
dirty mouse,
worn out batteries (wireless)
outdated display drivers,
3rd party pointer software (most common with wireless mice and touchpads)
incidental bump of touchpad

The PC is desktop type. The mouse is a wired optical type.
The mouse pointer jumping away to the left top corner area happens even
when I do not click anywhere but just moving the mouse to a certain
direction. This problem does not happen on Windows XP to which the OS is
switched from VISTA on the same hardware system(dual-boot system).
Further suggestion is appreciated.

My optical trackball does the same thing when I remove the ball. If the
sensor can't see the ball, the cursor goes to the top left corner of the
screen. What's happening on yours, might be that intermittently, dust
bunnies are covering the sensor. Pull the ball out and clean out all the
lint.

The mouse is a plain ordinary mouse. I do not see any ball on it. I
removed one screw, opened and looked inside but did not see any ball there.

2 more suggestions, spend $5 and try a different mouse.
make sure your video drivers are completely up to date. check windows
update, and your video card mfg website to see if there are any updates.

a "plain ordinary mouse" will have a highly-visible ball. You must be
using an optical mouse.

I tried a different wired mouse but the problem symptom remained.
I switched the OS from Vista SP1 to XP SP3(It's dual-boot system) and no
such problem happened.
I tried another machine running Vista SP1 and noticed the same problem.
The above experiments appears to point to Vista SP1 which may be the
culprit.
While writing the above it occurred to me that I should try VISTA with
no SP1 installed. I will post back.
