mouse keeps disconnecting/reconnecting!

I have an Intellipoint Wheel Mouse Optical, software version 4.1 fully
compatible with XP. Recently my mouse has started to
disconnect and reconnect on a regular basis, perhaps 5-10 minutes apart.
Currently I have it plugged into my USB port, and when it disconnects
I hear the "disconnect" sound and vice versa when it reconnects. When it
does this, the mouse pointer stops for a second. This is happening often and
I can't put my finger on it!

I check device manager and there are no conflicts. I've recently bought a
digital camera and thought this might have something
to do with it. But its not connected all the time and device manager reports
no conflicts or IRQ conflicts.

I would try it in the PS/2 plug but I was having a similiar problem there
too; the mouse would drastically slow down in the middle of using it.
And it was already set to maximum sensitivity in the control panel. I've
tried reinstalling the software, but it doesn't seem to have helped.
Unplugging usually fixed it, but it keeps happening!

Any help would be appreciated.

I assume you have already checked the physical connections...

The mouse driver interacts with the video driver, so you might need to
update that. I also have the Intellimouse Optical on WinXP, but I have
never had any trouble with it. So I can't speak from experience. I
hope my reply was helpful.

Tim,
I posted a similar problem with USB and Firewire devices just disconnecting
for no apparent reason. My drivers are all in tack and all the cards
affected are different (USB 1.1 on motherboard, USB 2.0 card and Firewire
card as well as one on my video card) So I know it's not the card or the
driver for the port. Once devices worked fine, for months, not they
disconnect everytime I try using them and I have to reconnect them by
unplugging them and plugging them back in. If you find out what causing your
problem, I'd be interested in learning about it.
Good luck,
Kep

I've installed newer drivers for my video card and it still happens; so I
rolled it back to the old ones.

I thought it might be my digital camera. but now I recall this was happening
long before I installed it.

Damn it I hate bugs like this! I'll let you know if I find out anything.
I'd like to email a tech support but of course Microsoft charge for that
sort of thing!
No wonder Gates is so rich.
