mounting an extra hard drive

Do you sometimes have to break off pieces of metal on a case to mount
an extra hard drive? I just want to make sure I don't break anything
I'm not supposed to.

Thanks.

Rarely. But I've seen 1 or 2 cases like that. IIRC, it was the CD bays
that had a plate that needed broken.

Yes, particularly with the 5.25" drive bays usually used for optical drives.

You dont always need to break that metal plate out with a hard drive
that doesnt need front access tho, its usually possible to mount the
hard drive in a 5.25"/3.5" adapter and leave the metal plate in place.

Its only there to minimise the EFI for legal purposes, wont do any harm otherwise.

Unless EFI is a major concern, he's better off removing such
bay blanks because it will improve the passive airflow past
the drive, cool it better.

I have had to do this on all the computers I have had. There is usually
a metal plate at the front of the bay, held in place (quite firmly) at four
points by
a few millimeters of metal. Basically use a screw driver to waggle the plate
untill
metal fatigue causes the points where it is held to fracture.
