Motherboard Upgrade with Windows 2000 Pro

Can I upgrade my motherboard without reinstalling the
operating system? If not, and I reinstall Win 2000 from
CD, will it recognise the previous installation and retain
all my application settings?

(PS it's probably irrelevant but I'm upgrading from Aopen
AX63Pro Celeron 400Mhz to Gigabyte GA-8SG800 Celeron

Normally, unless the new motherboard is virtually identical to the
old one (same chipset, IDE controllers, etc), you'll most likely need
to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at the
very least (and don't forget to reinstall any service packs and
subsequent hot fixes):
