Modem error --> No dial tone, make sure modem connected to the phone line properly

Hi,
My aunt is currently using win98 with an internal dial up modem.
The computer was able to detect the modem, however, when I dial up to the
internet, I received the following error message:
"No dial tone, make sure the modem connected to the phone line properly."

I guess it's the connection is the problem. The modem has 2 connections, one
connected to the wall the other connected to the modem. I am sure it's
connected properyly, one line connected to the wall the other connected to
the phone. However, the phone doesn't ring either.
So my guess is that the connection has problem. Can anyone give me some
suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Hook up a standard phone to the line and make sure you can dial out. If it
works OK, then the modem might not be detecting the dialtone. I believe
win98 has an option in the dial up settings to not wait for the dial tone.
Its usually a checkbox in the dialup networking connection properties page.
(don't quite remember Win98 though. lol)

no, I can't even dial out, so I would guess it's the problem with the modem,
right?

If you can't even dial out with a standard phone on that line, the the line
is bad, not the modem.

Well that's exactly what the error says:

"No dial tone, make sure the modem connected to the phone line properly."

Perhaps the modem is just failed/worn out, or not seated properly in the PCI
slot.
