MMC cannot find disk defragmenter!

M

Mat Brady

I just updated my system to SP2 and now I get this
message... "MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32
\dfrg.msc

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an
MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC.
This may also be because you do not have sufficient
rights to the file."

Where did it go? I got rid of a few old programs from
add/remove programs. Perhaps I delelted it? Is that
possible? More importantly... How do I get it back?!??

Does this message appear when first starting your computer as well? If so you
have a virus pigg- backing your system32 file and need to restore all systems.

what I find when I look in the folder is

dfrg - microsoft common concole document
dfrgfat - application
dfrgntfs - application

And when I click on the apps, I get commeand line is not supported.

I do have my original install disc, can I just reload defrag from here?

Open Control Panel - Folder Options - View tab, select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", click OK.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the windows\inf folder. Find the dfrg.inf file, right click on it and select Install. You may be asked for the XP CD.
