Mix and Match Raid and non-Raid drives

I'm trying to set up my computer to dual-boot WinXP Pro and Win98SE, so that
I can run may favorite Win98 helicopter sim.

I have an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe Motherboard and two SATA drives in a RAID
array, formatted NTFS. I don't really want to format and re-partition this
array to set up a volume for Win98. I don't even know for sure that I can use
FAT32 in the RAID array.

Is it possible to install a new single IDE drive to boot the Win98 from?
Where can I find references to help with this? Is it as simple as physically
installing a new drive and selecting that as the location for the new OS?

You have a couple of problems here. First is Windows 9x cannot natively
be used on NTFS. You can play with this, but I doubt it will do what
you want:

Second problem is finding SATA RAID drivers for Windows 98. This
shouldn't be too difficult for the setup you have, but some less popular
boards may not have the same driver availability. I love ASUS. :)

Finally, you may have to reformat the drives as FAT32 in order to
install Windows 98. I am not sure if you are able to obtain this
software, but you may want to look at Microsoft Virtual PC or VMware.
These programs allow you to install an OS in a virtual environment and
run basically an OS from within Windows. I use this for all of my old
emulators that don't work on XP :D

If you have an IDE controler available for a new drive yes you can just add
a drive and install Win98 under most circumstances. However, this will not
generate a dual boot menu as such so it will be necessary to use a different
method to boot from one system to another.

On my ASUS board they have a nifty F8 option at the beginning which gives
the option of which drive you boot. I use it to boot into XP, W2K and Linux
without a problem. On a downside my ASUS (P4P800 Dlx) also has two
different settings for HD access. W2K and XP can run just fine in the
Enhanced Mode but W98 needs to be run in compatability mode. From memory I
do not remember if this can be set differently for SATA/PATA but I "think"
it can.

Good Luck,
Len
