MIssing Thumbnails

Hi, for a couple months now i have noticed that my individual picture files
in windows explorer no longer show a preview of what the picture is. It only
shows the picture of the program i have set up to open the file. I would like
to make it so i can see the thumbnails again. Any help would be very
appreciated. thanks

It may be as simple as opening a folder
and going to...View / Thumbnails. And then
going to: Tools / Folder Options / View tab /
Apply To All Folders button / Yes / OK.

If that doesn't do it...try the following:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

Still no success? Here's one more alternative...

There is a registry patch at the link below
that *might* solve your problem.

Read the following articles about editing
your registry before proceeding:

(322756) How to back up, edit, and restore
the registry in Windows XP and Windows

Scroll down to #17 right column:
"Restore Thumbnail Views In XP":
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If you decide to try it, let us know the result.

hey thank you for the help. the things you suggested did not help. The folder
options were applied correctly and the patch did not work. I think i know
where the problem is but i dont know how to fix it. Your second suggestion.
the one about typing REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL in the start... run menu. I typed
it in and it said that it failed and the specified module could not be found.
I figured if i can restore this the problem should remedy itself. AAny help
would be appreciated thank you

=====================================
When typing that command it's very easy to
make a mistake. Try copy / pasting the following
into the Run field:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

If that fails, try the following:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

If that fails, I don't have the answer.

Another solution to the "missing JPG thumbnails" problem

Hi,

While this is an ancient thread, it does appear fairly high in Google searches, so it's perhaps worth suggesting a method that worked for me, courtesy of one A R Miller.

It's at http://infohost.nmt.edu/~armiller/win2000/win2000rf.htm#thumbnail, but just in case it ever disappears, here's the text:

Thumbnail Views Missing
Normally, Explorer will show a thumbnail sketch of JPG and GIF files. However, the thumbnails may not show after Microsoft Office is uninstalled.

  • For missing JPG images, use Regedit to associate the .jpg file extension in the registry:
    1. Start regedit
    2. Locate and click the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg registry key.
    3. Right-click the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg registry key, point to New, and then click Key.
    4. Name the new key ShellEx.
    5. Right-click the new ShellEx registry key, point to New, and then click Key.
    6. Name the new key

      {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
    7. Click the new {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} registry key, right-click the Default value in the right pane, click Modify, and paste the following value data into the Value data box: {7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}
  • For missing GIF images, follow the above directions for JPG images, but change .jpg to .gif
Hope this is of some use to someone ... it fixed the problem on my machine!

Hi I know this is an old thread but still a valid one. I had the same problem and option 3 fixed it for me in about 1 minute.

Scroll down to #17 right column:
"Restore Thumbnail Views In XP":
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To the right of #17 it says "RESTORE THUMBNAIL VIEWS IN XP"
Click on that and you'll download a utility.
Once you open it, it will ask what type of files you want the thumbs restored to.
I was having problems with some avi files so I click the avi box.
In a few seconds all my avi files had there thumbnails back.

Goodluck!
