Microtek Scanner "can't find scanner" and continually scanning

I have a ScanMaker 9600 XL that is not being recognized by my computer.
I have tried reinstalling the ScanWizard (v. 3.09) software as well as
the SCSI driver, to no avail. I even tried a brand new cable. Nothing.
The other weird thing is that the scanner scans back and forth
continually when I turn it on and won't stop until I turn off the
power.

The scanner worked before on this same computer and operating system
(Win XP, no SP2) but after we moved everything went to hell in a
handbasket. I am starting to think that maybe the scanner was damaged
during the move, as I read that the scanner will become unrecognizable
if it is damaged.

This seems like a common problem but I have yet to find a solution that
works for me. Help?

What about ASPI? XP must have to find SCSI scanners.
