How can I stop the msmsgs.exe process from automatically
re-executing itself? I don't even want to use it, I use
MSN messenger instead!

Greetings Chris,

Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a new
"instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to also
keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in
the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Hello Jonathan,
I tried the above, and windows messenger is still trying to access the net.
It sometimes makes over 2000 attempts in less than a minute!
It usually makes 10-150 attempts each time.
I have turned it off in msconfig,
and have unchecked it in Norton AV, as you have instructed.
What now?

try to use this link, its in french but has 2 .reg files that will
stop it from loading and can autorize it to launch.

you can save both .reg files on your computer by right clicking on the
links "MessengerInterdit" and "MessengerAutorise" (stop and authorize
WM to launch, respectivelly)

http://a.vouillon.free.fr/faq-winxp.htm#37

once you click the MessengerInterdit .reg file make sure the process
isn't memory and it won't bother you at the next boot fo your
computer.

if you ever need windows messenger, just click the file
MessengerAutorise and it will be able to launch itself.

hth,
HT
