Messenger (shared file) prevents uninstall

Trying to uninstall Office97 (Pro), but always hung up
when Outlook's friend "Windows Messenger" shows up as a
shared file to be kept or removed. All other Office97
elements removeable individually, just Messenger is the
block. As part of WinXP (Pro), it is not removeable in
itself, or is it? I get CPU overload soon after I choose
to Keep (or Remove) Messenger as a shared file.
Any ideas?
Many Thanks!
Kento.

Greetings Kento,

Interesting problem -- you can remove Windows Messenger by doing the following:
Close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in the notification
area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run and type in
(copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

If you wish to reinstall Windows Messenger, you can do so here:
