Maximum number of styles in a TOC definition

The max number of styles in a TOC appears to be 12 - as
demonstrated by recording a macro with more than 12.

Can anyone confirm this?

In Word2000 a TOC can have a maximum of 9 levels, each of which can have its
own style; but you can have as many styles as you like mapping onto those 9
levels.

Perhaps you mean something else?

Thanks for the reply,

There seems to be a limit to the number of styles that can
be mapped.

We want a 3 level TOC, and have tried in VBA to assign
more than 12 styles but Word 2000/XP doesnt recognise
anything after the 12 style names.
