Making an MDE file in Access 2002

I believe that A2000 can only create MDEs in 2000 format. It is irrelevent
whether the 2000 MDB was created in A2000, or A2002.

Similarly, A2002 can only create MDEs in 2002 format.

It is indeed annoying. I'm note sure whether there is any good technical
reason why it needs to be that way - or whether it's just a marketing ploy
to make sure that you get both versions.

I am running Access 2002 with a default database file format of Access
2000 for backward compatibility.

In the Tools - Database Utilities Menu the Make MDE File selection is
ghosted out (cannot be selected).

There is not much in the documentation, but what little I have found
suggests that Access 2002 can only create MDE files from databases that
are originally Access 2002 format, and cannot create MDE files from
databases in Access 2000 format.

Could something this stupid and annoying be true?

If so, how can I create and MDE file for an Access 2000 file format
database in Access 2002?

If not, why is this selection not available? Possibly a setting that
needs to be changed?

The ability to create and modify A2K files from within A2K2 is provided for
compatibility reasons, as you've noted. If you are designing applications for
A2000 and need to create an MDE file in A2000 format, the assumption would be
that you had a copy of A2000 available to use, so just use that copy to create
your MDE.

In article <[email protected]>,
bthmpson@big_NOSPAM_foot.com says...

That was going to be my next step; I was beginning to fear that MS in
its wisdom would prevent me from doing even that.

So, to review, an A2k file created in A2K2 can be made into an MDE by
opening it in A2K and taking the appropriate steps?

Thanks Bruce.
Dual version compatibility did not exist prior to A2K2, so I would consider that
a bonus, not a hinderance.

You are correct of course; can I have A2k & A2K2 installed on the same
machine?
That is essentially correct. Just remember that the MDB cannot contain any
A2K2-specific features or your code will likely not compile (if the features
were in the code) and the application will certainly not work properly, possibly
generating application errors. I generally make it a habit to develop in the
earliest version that my application will be used and convert up *where
necessary*.
As far as I can recall I don't have any A2K2 specific features in my
app; I will check.
