If you have a working system, you can download a key-
viewer and run it.
If it's missing, look for a COA sticker on your computer
case or the box or CD case that was supposed to come with
your PC. If one didn't come with your PC, that's against
the law. You can complain to the brand company, who will
then have to fork up the key. It will be legal from that
point on.

A "key" is different from an "activation code".
A key allows you to install Windows from the CD. Windows
XP and Office XP have to be "activated" in addition to
needing the install key.

Hi Troy,

I have the same problem. I just opened my "FOR DISTRIBUTION
ONLY WITH A NEW PC" pack and discovered that I have no
product key. The original PC was scrapped long ago along
with the COA. Mine is the 2000 Professional. Can you help?

If you scrapped the PC, and you have the OEM (FOR DISTRIBUTION ONLY WITH A
NEW PC) version, then technically the CDs are worthless as legally you
cannot install them on another PC. OEM versions are tied to the first PC
they are installed on. When you sell, give away, scrap, etc the PC, the
licensing goes with it. This does not mean you cannot install it, just that
you cannot "legally" install it and you would have to use a pirated serial
number.

I have Office 2000 Professional on my home computer and now cannot find my
old case with the CD key number. Now, I want to install Office on a new
laptop. I was able to retrieve a cd key from Belarc but it came with only
20 numbers. What am I missing? What to do? JL

Hi Ann, you can use Product Key Finder to find & recover your product keys from Windows, Office. The product key for Windows 2000 profession is saved in Windows Registry but it is encrypted. You need to connect your hard drive to a working pc as a secondary hard drive, then follow these instructions:

1. Run Product Key Finder.
2. Click on the "Start Recovery" button.
3. Then select "From non-booting system", it will reveal your Windows 2000 product key instantly.
