Lost internet connectivity

I was touting MS Anti-Spyware to my friend and loaded it
on his PC. The scan seemed to stop midstream then
everything started to hang up. No apps wanted to load up,
and after a reboot I still couldn't get IE to find his
broadband connection. I had to leave cause our kids were
getting tired and I left him with a hosed-up
computer.HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not called a BETA just for grins. ;-)

If this is an XP SP2 box then in a command prompt type

netsh winsock repair

If that fails, or this is not an SP2 box then use System Restore. If you
can't get that far the use Last Known Good Configuration from the boot menu.

Hi Steve - Before you try to remove spyware using any program, download both
a copy of LSPFIX here:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

AND a copy of Winsockfix for W95, W98, and ME
http://www.tacktech.com/pub/winsockfix/WinsockFix.zip
Directions here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257

or here for Win2k/XP http://files.webattack.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe
Info here: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Directions here: http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

The process of removing certain malware may kill your internet connection.
If this should occur, these programs, LSPFIX and WINSOCKFIX, will enable you
to regain your connection.

NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the Run command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs. (You can also
try this if you're on XP SP1. There has also been one, as yet unconfirmed,
report that this also works there.) Also, one MS technician suggested the
following sequence:

netsh int reset all
ipconfig /flushdns

See also: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm for additional XPSP2
info/approaches using the netsh command.

You may need to download these on another machine and burn them to a CD to
take to the problem machine for installation there.

You can remove the product via Control Panel, Add or Remove programs.

However, that won't restore your connectivity.

To fix that, use one of these two methods, depending on your Windows
version:

If you are on Windows XP Service Pack 2,
Please type this at a command prompt:

netsh winsock reset

Hit the enter key,
then restart the machine.

For Windows 2000, Pre SP2 versions of XP, or for Windows Server 2003 pre
sp1, follow the procedure in this Microsoft Knowledge base article:
