Lock up at dialogue box

Is anybody familiar with the following?

Windows XP home will be running fine and then I click into a text or
dialogue box, for example to enter a password, and the system just freezes.
I cannot recover using ctrl + alt + del; the only way of recovering is to
reset or power down using the power switch.

I have an AMD 2500XP CPU, 256 MB PC2700 DDR Kingmax ram, SATA 150 Maxtor HD,
Soundblaster 1024 PCI sound card, ASUS A7V600 mainboard and a PCI ADSL
modem. System is runnng a 333 FSB (or rather 166 x 2 ).

Problem was worst when I had just installed XP and then improved but is
still present and still annoying. I have searched the MS knowledge base etc
but to no avail.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

Uninstalled Zone Alarm and now seems to be OK. Not an umcommon problem
apparently due to the true vector service of ZA not loading completely at
start up.
