Local Area connection

Mark

I'm a relatively new user of XP and am connected to the
net via NTL Broadband and not having any problems.
However, at the bottom right of the screen I have a
computer logo with a red X on it saying Local Area
Connection - A network cable is unplugged. When I click
and check propoerties it is "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family
Fast Ethernet NIC".

Do I disable it or just leave it there?

Thanks.

Go to Control Panel - Network Connections, right click on each
connection in 'LAN or High speed internet' and take Properties. Uncheck
the 'show icon in notification area' at the bottom, and click Apply

Alex,

I'm running XP Pro on my laptop which is part of a home network where my
main computer has the internet connection. I've done as you said but the
x'd out icon still is there. The only thing that gets rid of it is to
disable the connection. Everything is working OK though, so I guess I'll go
with, If it works, don't fix it. Any ideas?

It might be one of those cases where two references to the connection
have become inconsistent. That would though be corrected usually by
disabling and re-enabling. If things are working I think I would just
hide it - r-click in the Taskbar; Properties, have Hide Inactive
checked, then click Customise. Next to the entry, click in the
Behaviour' column and choose the 'Always Hide' option
