Limited Or No Connectivity - Bug?

Caleb

I recently installed and ran MS-AntiSpyware and I believe
it removed spyware file that has somehow hampered my
connection to my network/internet. The internet comes
back for only short intervals and that's how I'm writing
this. I tried the WinsockXPFix tool and it didn't work at
all. The network error message still appeared. "Limited or
No Connectivity" None of the system restore points that
were made before the scan will work. Some of the programs
that were removed may have caused my problem. In any case
I undoubtedly only have a few minutes before the internet
shuts off again at my currect location. Any help in this
matter would be tremendously appreciated, thank you.

You've got an issue which is more subtle than the usual one caused by
removal of spyware from the system. When items are removed, a "cleaner.log"
file is created in the folder in which Microsoft Antispyware is installed
(typically c:\program files\microsoft antispyware)

The content of that file may give you a clue about what was removed that is
relevant.

Aside from that path, can you describe the hardware and software that
connect this system to the Internet? Wired, or wireless? Any special
software from the ISP required? What kind of Internet connection? Cable?
DSL? If DSL, do you need to put in credentials to connect?

Sounds like a wireless connection - might need to rebuild the profile or
wireless network information for this connection if it is.

I called my brother, he's somewhat of an IT guy or
something along those lines, and he came by my place and
apparently fixed the problem. He uninstalled ZoneAlarm
firewall. I guess ZoneAlarm hasn't really been working
well with SP2 or something, I'm not sure. In any case, it
appears that the deleted spyware and the recent networking
issues were completely coincidental. I want to thank the
two gentlemen who tried to help me with this. If it turns
out that my brother did not successfully fix the problem
then I'll be back here posting again shortly. Thanks again
and sorry to bother you.

Terrific. Did he also make sure that you were protected by a router or the
Windows firewall?

If you have Service Pack 2 installed try this:

Start - Run - CMD (This brings open a Command prompt)

Inside of this type in "NETSH WINSOCK RESET" without the
Quotes. It should say your winsocks catalog has been
successfully reset.

Now restart your computer and try to connect to the
internet, hope this works.
