i have a new laptop that i primarily use for excel and other databases
programs. Everyone once in a while i wil use Word but everytime i do, the
left arrow key inserts a "-" . All of the other 3 arrow keys work as they
should. I use that key to edit, back up change something but the way its set
up, i am continuously putting in "-"'s. I do not have this problem with any
other software programs. The left arrow key works as it should with all
software except word

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Just a suggestion:
Go to Tools\Customize\Options\Keyboard and in "Press new shortcut key"
textbox push the left arrow key it mist show "curently assigned to:
CharLeft". Also see if it's saved in Normal.dot you can rebuid it to set
everything in its default.

ok i see what you are talking about. When i go in there and type in the left
arrow key it says "currently assigned to ....(prefix key)" and if i hit the
left arrow key a second time it says "currently assigned to..... -en dash".
Now that i know thats the problem, how do i fix it?

This (or any key putting out wrong result) can be caused by a keyboard malfunction, to find out, turn on the onscreen keyboard and see if it does the same thing, if not then it's just a matter of replacing keyboard. I had same problem, with right arrow.

(caused by spilling coffee or whatever into keyboard )
