Had pblms with laptop/Win98. Have 1 large drive partitioned as C and D. C had
the Win98 install. I installed XP on D since it was much larger. Install
successful.
Can I now go and delete Windows related files on C: to free up space, or is
XP on D: using some of old Win98 on C:?
P.S. This was an new install, NOT and upgrade, as old WIN98 setup corrupted
by virus's and wouldn't boot!

Thanks, (e-mail address removed)

No, "C" is your boot drive, if you want to run XP you'll need to change your D
drive to C and then change your old C drive to D, format it and use it for
storage.

When you installed XP on D:, the following files were placed in the root of
the C: drive:
NTLDR
NTDETECT.COM
BOOT.INI
BOOTSECT.DOS
The first 3 are essential for XP to boot, the fourth allows you to boot
Win 98 so could be deleted if you are finished with 98. These files are
hidden,
system files so may not be visible unless you unhide them. Do not format the
C: drive or your computer will become unbootable.
