laptop battery life

Hi, I bought a 3 GHz laptop 6 months ago. It has been used it quite a bit,
but mainly on the mains. I noticed that the battery life had started to
deteriorate until now, it is non existent. I've used the laptop (only I use
it) according to the manufactures instructions, i.e. initial charge, running
the battery down, and then recharging. I've phoned the manufactures
(Novatech) and they say that the battery is out of warranty and that there
is nothing they will do.

My question is, is this processor too big for a laptop (it's not a mobile
processor)? Is this possibly a one off battery? I would like to replace the
battery, £82, but if the replacement is only going to last 6 months then I
won't bother.

Has anyone else got a large processor and had similar problems, or better
life?

I would be glad to hear any comments!

Have you tried cycling the battery several times. Batteries don't hold up if
they are kept at full charge all the time. If you are using it only as a
desktop unplug it once in a while and let it discharge and charge. Some
people remove the battery when using it as a desktop. Discharge and charge
the battery half a dozen times and it may come back to life providing the
cells haven't shorted....

Yes, I have followed the manufactures instructions to the letter, in fact I
was being accused of being over the top with it by the Mrs! As I've said
I've often discharged it fully then recharged with out any interference.

The batteries are now dead, they will not last more then 10 mins.

I do know that I've followed good battery maintenance, (support from the
manufacturer confirmed that my maintenance had been OK), what I would like
to know is whether this size processor is a bit too large for battery life !
(or if it is relevant)! Thanks

This problem has nothing to do with XP or any other OS. You need to
talk to your hardware vendor about it.

What type battery is it? There are many new re-chargeable
battery types, some have better life-spans, charge faster,
hold more power and cost more. NiCad is the oldest
technology, and has the most problems.

Check third party battery suppliers, you might find a better
battery.
