am looking for more than just cd burning software (already have those)
and mp3 burning software (again, already have these) but anything along
the line of making dvd slideshows or movies or something(s) that will
allow me to take full advantage of my dvd re-writer ?

DVD slideshows came up at a photoediting class recently and I put together
the following free stuff which will make a reasonable movie, no menus though
:(

1. xvid codec - use in SSMM otherwise the file size can become unworkable.
www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml

2. Slide Show Movie Maker (SSMM) a bit slow but makes a .avi(mpg4) movie
from photos with transitions, sound, picture titles etc.
www.joern-thiemann.de

3. VSO DivxToDVD - - authors the DVD - (makes a VIDEO_TS folder with
required .ifos , .vob's etc)
www.321download.com/LastFreeware

4. ImgTool Classic uses the VIDEO_TS files to create an .ISO (CD/DVD
image).
www.coujo.de

5. DeepBurner - writes the .ISO file to DVD - not needed if you already have
a burning app which burns .ISO's
http://www.deepburner.com/

6. VideoLAN Player - check your work as you go along.
Needed because Windows Media Player is not very good (understatement) at
playing .avi (mpg4) and DVD (.vob) files
www.videolan.org

If you do not have a sound editor then Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is the one to go for.
SSMM is picky as to audio format ( 48 Mhz 16bit stereo)

Tested these in WindozeXP and Win2000 - don't know but don't suppose
Win98/ME will work.

A good place to get info about DVD formats is www.videohelp.com

I've been looking for good freeware to handle DVD burning, too, especially
for the grands' movies which I'll try to backup to disc on a USB drive.
It's beginning to look like CDBurnerXP Pro might be the best choice but I'm
anxious to see replies from freeware users with heavy video burning
experience. Juzme

BTW, converting with freeware from avi to dvd, mpg, etc., has been a
nightmare for me; novice that I am. Help such as that from rich is a
terrific boon but I'll be reading from his post for weeks. More precise
advise in re. taking avi to an old stand alone player will be great. Juzme
