I've tried it all. Windows Defender WILL NOT UPDATE!!

I've tried everything that applies to me. I am running WinXP Pro.

I attempted the "root certificates" solution and these updates are not in my
Optional Software selection of Windows Update.com...

I've tried EVERYTHING else, up to and including manually removing anything
pertaining to Defender in the Registry. Reinstalled Defender and WHAM,
0x80240022 baby!

Again, the information on this page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924123,

did not help me in any way shape or form because-

"To find the root certificates update, use Windows Update to scan the
computer, and then click Software, Optional. The root certificates update
appears under the Optional Software Updates heading."

- well it's not there!!

Please help! ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I'm the type that loves to keep it genuine because Microsoft does great
things but if this cannot be fixed soon I'm more than willing to drop ONECARE
and Defender.

Hello GRB,

Verify that you have the required Microsoft Windows Update prerequisite
files. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then visit the following Microsoft
Web site:
http://www.windowsupdate.com

b. Install all prerequisite updates that are available.

- well it's not there!! because that file is for Windows 2000

Please try this KB

Hey man! Thanks for the speedy reply!

I can assure you that I have all neccessary updates. I'm no novice put it
that way.

If it helps any, the definition update that won't install is "Definition
Update 1.14.1828.5"

At WU.com when I copy paste the Failed message, here's what I receive:

Failed Updates

Problem: Please check your update history for a description.

Microsoft Windows Defender
Definition Update 1.14.1828.5 for Windows Defender (KB915597)

Again, I've tried everything man. Uninstalling/reinstalling, you name it...

One other oddity in this situation however is while deleting the Defender
registry keys, there were a few that would not allow me to delete them. I'm
assuming, naturally, that those are the keys and bis associated with
OneCare...Maybe I will uninstall OneCare and try to delete those keys. THEN
try to reinstall it...Worth a shot I s'pose..

Thanks again man!

The root certificates update only applies to this situation if you are
running Windows 2000.

Engel has posted the right reference:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355

If you are on a home system, or at least one not on a corporate or
institutional network which might use WSUS or some similar mechanism to
control updating, and if Windows Update and AutoUpdate are otherwise working
fine on your system, please try this:

Go to a command prompt in the folder Windows Defender is installed in.
Typically, this would be c:\program files\windows defender.

Type:

mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -All
(and hit enter)

When that completes, type:
mpcmdrun -SignatureUpdate

this will take some time--give it five minutes at least.

If this doesn't do the job, post back to this thread with the tail of
\windows\windowsupdate.log i.e. just the very last portion of this perhaps
quite large file relating to that update attempt you've just done--and let's
see what is happening.

Hi GRB,

Well I'm novice :-(

I suggest to go in safe mode to try unistall or clean the registry, also you
can try
with CCleaner and or HDCleaner for a more thorough cleaning.
Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

Note, When you install Ccleaner, uncheck the Yahoo toolbar option.
Note, in Options, Advanced, uncheck - Only delete files in Windows folders
older than 48 hours.
Note: uncheck Windows Defender in the applications.
Do a scan with all the check marks on.
Open Ccleaner and press "Windows" "Aplications" and Run Cleaner from the
menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.
Run twice Ccleaner, the same as above, until you get “0 bytes to be removedâ€.
