Is it possible to Preview in Picture & Fax Viewer, but Edit in Picture It! Pro 9???

M

Melissa

Hi there,

I've managed to get Picture It! Pro 9 to open as the editing "go-to"
application; however, when PIP9 opens, it doesn't present me with the
picture in question, but rather "File Browser" window within PIP9. How can
I get it to open the picture I want to edit; automatically?

Thank you!

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without the
quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

In the Data column you should see the following string:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will see
your current default)

Replace the string with the following path (including the quotes).

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 9\pi.exe" "%1"

To replace the string...

Left click "default" to select it.

Go to...Edit / Modify...

In the "Edit String" field...

Copy/Paste the following:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 9\pi.exe" "%1"

Left click...OK.

(this assumes your path is the same as mine)

Now, your images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if you left click the Edit button...Picture It! 9 opens.

Good luck.

If you do not want to edit your registry, just do the following.
Right click on the photo you want to edit.
Click on Open with on the opening menu.
This will open a list of photo editing software installed on your computer.
Just click on Picture It and your photo will open in it.

Hi John,

My registry (I'm running WinXPPro) doesn't have the SystemFileAssociations
location under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. What do I do? Thank you for your help
with this! :)

Hi Yves,

It seems your instructions took the Picture & Fax Viewer preview out of the
equation for me; which I didn't really want. I like having the P&FV quickly
preview the file without initially accessing such a "heavy" application just
to preview the file. Again, the only issue I have is the picture I want to
edit isn't displayed in PIPro9 after proceeding from P&FV in edit mode.
Thanks though for being so kind and trying to help me. :)

I think you went one step too far.
After you click on Open with, don't click on Choose program and then the
program you want.
After you click on Open with, a list of software will open, click on the one
you want and the picture will open in it. This will not change your Picture
and Fax viewer.
Or maybe I am not getting quite what you want!

Hi,

Interesting...I'm running WinXP Home and the registry
entries could be different from XP Pro. However...after
opening HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT...you have to scroll
waaaaaay down to find "SystemFileAssociations"
maybe you didn't go far enough.

Try this path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\
command

(same instructions)

Hi again John,

You were right; I wasn't looking deep enough down the tree in the registry
for that location... I'm so embarrassed! I found your alternate first,
changed the entry there, and then found the original location.
However, the registry changes still doesn't put the editing JPG in the PIP9
window... it's still prompting me with the "File Browser" window; which is
quite irritating, I must say.
Is there a switch in the path we're missing to get the end result that I'm
hoping to have?
Thanks again for helping me try to achieve photo application harmony on my
home PC. :)

=====================================
You stumped me this time Melissa...using the
exact instructions I gave you on my WinXP Home
machine works fine. I can still use my Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer to browse my files but if
I right click an image and choose Edit...DIP9
opens the image in the work area. And if I click
the "Closes this program and opens the image
for editing" button (or...Ctrl / E) it does the same.

You originally stated that you had:
"managed to get Picture It! Pro 9 to open as the
editing "go-to" application"...

How did you accomplish that? Maybe the problem
lies with your original settings change?

Maybe you need to reset your file associations
back to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Try this...right click an image file and
from the menu, go to......Open With /
Choose Program / Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer...be sure to check the
box..."Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file".

Dear John,

THAT DID IT!!
I restored my file associations; then chose the P&FV to open them, and PIP9
as the program to associate them with. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!)
