Is DLGDIAG magic?

Mike

I have a Western Digital Caviar (WD400BB-0CCFC0). About a year ago it
started giving me gyp - I ran DLGDIAG on both the quick and the extended
tests - both came back return code 0000

I couldn't RMA it because it wasn't coming back as faulty, however I
didn't want to trust my WDC, so the plan was to run my I ran it with my
very old HDD for about 6 moths in instead until I got round to
rebuilding it.

Anyway due to commitments etc it took me nearly a year before I got
round to reloading it. Within about 5 days it has started doing a lot
of clicking. A couple of days later I did a google search and found out
the likely cause would be a sign it could be on it's way out, so I
quickly did a driveimage backup to the second (identical) WDC I have on
the other IDE channel.

Within 24 hours the PC wouldn't boot up with disk failures. Quick test
came back ret code 0007. Extended test came back with 0000. Re-ran
quick test and that came back 0000 and my disk appears relatiively ok
now - apart from it's clickling etc. This clicking usually occurs when
booting up and when accessing applications on the hard drive (e.g.
firing up IE)

I really feel like I can't trust this but am frustrated that I can't RMA
because of the return codes. Am I destined to just having to write this
disk off, even though it's still within its guarantee period according
to the WD site. OK I am using DLGDIAG 5.0 from when I had the problem
last time and download the latest software but I'm sure that won't make
it fail.

I've read so many people say when their disk drives are clicking to RMA
it, but I'm not sure where I stand - any advice greatly appreciated
please
