Invalid Resolution or Resolution not Supported

I am currently running a school where I have just taken over the operation
of the complete IT section. We have this problem that nobody has seemed to
resolve or have even heard of before:

Excel documents are being held back by the win2k print server for "Invalid
Resolution" or "Resolution Not Supported". I have the server set up so that
it holds mismatched documents. We only use HP Printers (2100 and 8150's with
built in jetdirect cards)

These are the main points:

It is only Excel documents that do this.
It is not certain Excel docs, all of them do this.
It used to work fine on NT4.
We have tried using a standard HP LJ Plus and non - plus driver.
It works fine if the printer is local.
We have to have it set to completely spool the doc first.
IP's are static and not conflicting.
All other docs print happily.
We make the printer print in spool mode.
We use 2000 pro and Citrix and both of these cause this error.
All our servers for this are Dell Poweredge with win2k svr.

Please oh please can someone save the day. none of our external contractors
know why this is happening and we need to run reports in excel quite soon.

Thanks
