Gerry, thanks for your interest, I went to the link you gave, the prob is
that I do not have the manage add ons option in any of the menus in internet
explorer, is my version just old or has it been corrupted(my recent
experiences suggest it may be). thanks for any future help you may be able
togive

Hi Jim,
Which you have now is Internet Explorer Service SP1, you will not have
Add-Ons Manager feature on this, it is only available on Window SP2 service
pack.
You should pay a visit to MS windows Update and get the latest updates for
you browser and other System Secuirty updates which you seem be missing.
Also check and see your Update Engine is it ON or OFF, and may be you need
to download the IE7 download blocker if you didn't decide yet about IE7
install, which you may better to wait until it is stable give it until
Christmas or so!.
Here is the link for windows update go and get which you missed before:

HTH.

nass/Gerry,
thanks very much for your assistance. I have just logged back into this
newsgroup and find the advice from nass regarding updating to sp2, I have
just done this and so far after much fiddling about it looks ok.
